The Cheapest University
The Cheapest University est une école expérimentale et gratuite. Son dessin et son organisation sont pris en charge par des artistes. Elle s’est constituée par affinités électives, autour d’un esprit d’enthousiasme et d’ouverture. Projet contributif et artistique, il est aussi engagé qu’immédiat : seulement dépendant de la volonté de ceux·lles qui la composent, modulable selon les initiatives qu’il accueille. Il s’inscrit comme nécessité dans leurs pratiques, par prolongement de leurs recherches personnelles ou par invention collective de situations prenant en charge des données sociales et artistiques. The Cheapest University s’attache à créer des conditions de travail collectif permettant l’accueil de nouveaux membres opérant sous la forme d’une communauté d’attention.
En 2015, un groupe de recherche s’est constitué via des réunions mensuelles, des conférences publiques (Saisir l’école avant qu’elle ne s’évanouisse à l’Université Paris 8 et les Cheap Talks à la Villa Belleville), un workshop préparatoire (L’école emportée à Treignac Projet en Corrèze) et la mise en place d’un site internet participatif (partage de documents, flux d’images, forum).
The Cheapest University poursuit ses recherches et élabore des programmes collectifs dans des espaces variés (institutions artistiques, radios, écoles d’art, lieux de résidences, appartements et bars). Ses activités s’articulent autour d’une série d’ateliers expérimentaux ouverts au public et aux contributions extérieures (EAAPES, Silent Red Alert, How to Become a Lesbian,…). Opérant sur un mode mineur et intermittent, créant ses propres conditions de visibilité, TCU organise également des rencontres et discussions publiques dans le cadre de programmes expérimentaux inscrits dans le temps (The Long Love Letter, What’s in My Bag, Pleasure of Missing Out - La sèche) qui sont l’occasion d’échanges et de séances de travail privilégiées avec des artistes et auteur·rice·s invité·e·s (L’histoire est plein de gens qui n’ont juste pas, avec Anne Boyer ; On colors, avec Amy Sillman ; Tools, configurations, regenerations, collisions, adaptations, accidents, avec Margaret Honda). En 2018, The Cheapest University crée Donna Quixote Press, une maison d’édition qui publie les traductions et les textes de prose expérimentale, les fictions et les essais produits au sein de ses ateliers.

The Cheapest University is a free and experimental school currently based in Paris. It has constituted itself through elective affinities, gathering a growing number of participants around an enthusiastic and open spirit. It is artistic and contributive, and does not resist a tendency to merge learning experiences with œuvre making. The Cheapest University is contributive : it is immediate and committed, depending solely on the will-power of its members. It infiltrates their practice or is infiltrated by it, extending personal research or enabling the invention of collective situations that produce knowledge and/or/as art. Since its founding in 2015, the project has organized regular meetings, public talks, experimental workshops, and various online forms of research and work through its website. New members are welcome regardless of their age or state of studies. The goal of The Cheapest University’s program is to allow artists to take the co-production and transmission of knowledge in their own hands. The written form isn’t necessarily privileged. The work of art, all mediums encompassed, and the exhibition are considered as many interfaces allowing access to knowledge produced within The Cheapest University. From September 2016 to October 2017, The Cheapest University was granted a residency at Carreau du Temple, where we were able to continue our research while having access to the various infrastructures of the institution. Several propositions were therefore being put forth: punctual public events and workshops, ranging from an hour to several days, that inhabited the main building as well as outer locations. This year saw the creation of a publishing house (Donna Quixote Press), a follow up on the Cheap Talks, a program of lectures initiated in 2016, that allowed lecturers to present projects in an unfinished elaboration phase and discuss it, and a new cycle entitled « School Visits » that invites occasional guests to come share their experience of school, among other projects. Community of attention, The Cheapest University thrives to offer experimentation and emulation around working formats and presentations whose public and formal dimensions are variables adjusted to the nature of each projects initiated within its project.
